There are approximately 20,000 associations in the United States at the national, regional, state and local levels. Charged with the promotion of the professional and business interests of their memberships, the success of these organizations depends directly on the dedication and commitment of their volunteer leadership. And of the decisions made by the leadership of such organizations, few are as challenging and none are more important than choosing a chief staff executive (CSE).

The following articles were assembled to assist the association search committee focus on the forces and structures that define and affect an association's CSE needs. More than anything else, they are intended to spark discussion at an early stage in the search process to insure that the best candidates will be identified and that the best amongst these will be chosen to serve.
